For most of us who love beauty and makeup, we get starstruck by the glittery packages and new colors constantly released by makeup brands. Because of that, most of us don’t take the time to think about what we’re really putting on our faces – me included.
There are thousands of “safe” products that beauty brands have available to them, but many still test on animals. When we think of animal testing, we usually think of lab rats, mice and bunnies, but you probably don’t know that many test on dogs and cats, too.
Here’s what you need to know about some of the most popular cruelty free makeup brands.
3 Ways to Know if You are Buying Cruelty Free Makeup
Keep an eye open for “new” products being used in makeup. Usually when brands brag about “new ingredients,” they are testing those on animals. There’s thousands of products that are considered “safe” so if it’s “new,” it’s probably being tested.
If you buy vegan makeup, you’re ensuring that the product is also cruelty free.
Look for the bunny on the packaging. If you see a product stamped with the Leaping Bunny logo, it means there was no animal testing throughout the entire development of the product.
Leaping Bunny Certified vs. PETA Agreement
There are a couple of different certifications for cruelty free makeup brand: Leaping Bunny certified and PETA “certified.” What’s the difference?
Leaping Bunny is the only internationally recognized certification organization for cruelty free makeup brands. Leaping Bunny requires that a company agree to audits of their brands to determine whether or not they are truly cruelty free whereas PETA only requires a written agreement signed by the company. Even if a company isn’t certified by Leaping Bunny or recognized as cruelty free by PETA, that doesn’t mean it’s NOT cruelty free – it just means they haven’t applied for the Leaping Bunny program or they haven’t been added to the PETA list. There’s many makeup brands out there who don’t test on animals that you won’t find on any list of cruelty free makeup brands.
